veteran's workbench
W
hen a pro like our
WOOD.
Shop Manager
Chuck Hedlund designs and
builds a workbench, you can
bel he means business. Wilh
35 years of workshop experi-
ence under his tool bell, he
knows what features work besl
in a full-service bench. Too,
he
knows what he doesn'llike.
Says Chuck,
"I
worked around
benches thai slOod on wobbly
legs and ones lhat moved when
you applied the least bit of
pressure, say, from handplan-
ing a vise-held workpiece. My
design solves lhose problems
while giving me a whole lot
more." As you can see
above
and beginning on
page
72, lhis labor of love
may have hit the mark dead center.
Talk about hefty-Chuck's workbench weighs in at more than 200 pounds,
lhanks in part to the medium-density fiberboard (MDF) benchtop and frame-
work. No way is it going anywhere. "Nice thing about a MDF benchtop,"
Chuck says, "is that il provides a smooth, flat surface, costs less than a hard-
wood top, and can be replaced easily." Nothing wrong with that.
Chuck's workbench also provides ample storage. In addition to the cabinet
areas, you have a sliding vertical drawer with adjustable shelves for holding
portable power lools, and a roomy hori:r.ontal drawer for hand tools and mis-
cellaneous. Both open on each side of the cabinet for maximum accessibility.
My favorite feature of all, however, is the side-draft dust collector built
righl into the bench, creating an environmentally friendly sanding station
complete with a detachable nonslip mat and benchlOp hold-downs. Throw in
the elecuical strips for portable and benchtop power lools, and you have your-
self lhe end-all, be-all workbench of which woodworking dreams are made.
Way 10 go Chuck. Readers, it's all yours.
