Cause and Effect Activities
Begin by talking with the students about Cause &
Effect, using the poster. Discuss each pair of
pictures, and point out how each cause leads to its
effect. Then ask students to come up with other
effects that may have resulted from each cause. For
instance, because the day is hot and sunny, what
else might have happened? An ice cream cone melts,
a puddle dries up, we sit in the shade, etc.
Point out to your students that sometimes the
effect comes before the cause in a sentence. On the
board or chart paper, write “Everyone cheered
because...” and ask students to brainstorm reasons
for the crowd to cheer. Record their suggestions on
the board. Other examples you might discuss are:
Discuss situations that may occur during the
school day that are examples of Cause & Effect.
These examples might include such things as:
My teacher will be proud of me if...
I will make new friends if...
I will enjoy lunch today because...
If the bus is late...
If I forget my homework...
If I study my spelling words...
If I follow school rules...
After spending time on this discussion, proceed with
the activities included in this Really Good Stuff
®
Activity Guide. It is always worthwhile to spend a
few extra minutes discussing each activity, so that
your students are certain about what they need to
do. Have fun!
